Just to the west of the main university building are (left) a statue of Gustav Adolphus II, founder of the university, and (right) a plaque devoted to Friedrich Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932), who received the Nobel Prize in 1909 for his studies in physical chemistry. Ostwald studied and worked at the University of Tartu 1872-1881. Ostwald is credited with the introduction of the term "mole" to denote the atomic weight of a substance in grams.
